Materials for the production of telescopic slides
Read our article to find out more about the different materials used in the manufacture of telescopic slides and why stability plays a decisive role here. We highlight which materials have proven particularly successful.
Telescopic slides are used in many different areas. As different as the type of use may be, all telescopic slides must meet one important requirement: They must be particularly stable. For this reason, not every material is used for the production of telescopic slides. We have summarized the different materials used for the production of telescopic slides below.
Telescopic rails made of galvanized steel
Many telescopic slides today are made of galvanized steel. The reason for this is that this material is absolutely sufficient for most applications. Galvanized steel also offers one major advantage, and that is the price. Galvanized steel is very cost-effective, and there is also a wide range available. With this material, it is also possible to manufacture telescopic slides in black or white.
This is certainly not necessary in all areas, but there are areas of application where such a color selection is desired. Despite all its advantages, galvanized steel also has one major disadvantage: rust formation. The corrosion resistance of galvanized steel is provided by a coating. This means that as soon as the zinc coating on the steel is damaged or removed, it may rust.
Telescopic rails made of aluminum
Aluminum is a material that offers a great advantage because it cannot rust. The reason for this is that aluminum does not contain any iron. It is true that aluminum reacts very easily with oxygen on the surface, just as iron does, but it reacts differently. While the iron oxide crumbles away, a thin layer is formed by the aluminum oxide.
This protects the light metal underneath. Compared to stainless steel, aluminum is an absolute lightweight. Aluminum weighs slightly more than half as much for a workpiece of the same size. However, this does not mean that aluminum is less stable and durable. In terms of stability and durability, aluminum is in no way inferior to stainless steel.
Stainless steel telescopic slides
Stainless steel is a very robust and resistant material. Telescopic runners made of stainless steel offer particularly high corrosion resistance. The material has a chromium content, which makes stainless steel very resistant to rust. For stainless steel to rust at all, certain conditions must prevail.
This is the case, for example, if the material is exposed to an aggressive load and does not contain sufficient chromium. Stainless steel telescopic slides are always the best choice when great importance is attached to a very robust, durable and long-lasting product.

Special materials
There are not only the standard types of steel, but also some other steels that can be used for telescopic slides. These are absolutely special telescopic slides that are made to order. This means that these special slides are more expensive than conventional models and the delivery time is longer. It is also not possible to manufacture all models from such special materials.
Fazit
Telescopic slides can be made from different materials. Not every material is suitable for every application. It makes sense to consider exactly what properties the telescopic slides should have. The right material can then be selected based on this.
